Greece is one of my favourite destinations, and its a top place that I recommend to my friends hunting for ideas on where to go in September. The gorgeous cyclades of Santorini are best enjoyed in the late summer when most of the crowds of the peak season have returned home.
It is just one of the most beautiful and romantic destinations I have ever been to. It is also perfect for a girls trip, nearly every corner is picturesque and totally instagrammable (if that is your thing ha!). The sights are incredible and the weather is not too hot so it is perfect for lounging around and watching the yachts sail past or hiking from village to village. My favourite town in Santorini is Oia. It is the most popular one for a reason, but in the summer it is usually packed full of tourists and you don’t get the chance to truly appreciate the beauty of the quaint alleyways of the community if you have to continuously struggle to find your way through a crowd of people. Trust me, I went in July so I know!
Best thing to do in Santorini – Just explore!
Avoid the main road and take a detour through the sea facing hotels and apartments on the way to town. Have fun getting lost, knowing that walking in the direction of the windmills will lead you safely back to the main centre. There are also little gates in the no go area, so you don’t accidentally stumble into someone’s house!
Another incredible part – The Sunset!
If you are still trying to decide where to go in September, just know that there are few places in the world where the sunset is as glorious as this. If you know of any, please leave a comment below so that I can add that destination to my wish list! I would recommend going into town early to get a good spot as hoards of people descend into town near sunset. Even better still, make a reservation at one of the roof top restaurants and enjoy a fine meal while you wait for the sun to set!
The sunrise is just as incredible if you can wake up on time!
Where to stay in Santorini?
You can either get an airbnb like we did (it was luxurious but yet very affordable, unfortunately I didn’t take pictures) or I would also recommend Mystique hotel. It was a stone’s throw from our apartment so we spent a couple of days there just chilling as the location in Oia is the BEST for admiring the rich deep vista of the sea. I will have a separate post on Mystique shortly.
